Trading shots for seltzer.
Yes, you can still connect, fit in and dare I say – have fun, regardless of what’s in your glass. I’m proving that to myself every day.
We all get here in somewhat the same way. We have questions. Our actions and our minds are no longer in agreement and we find ourselves googling things like “how to drink less” or “how to control alcohol”. We wouldn’t say we’re alcoholics, but we are definitely wondering if it’s time to do something.
Stop asking yourself if you’re an alcoholic and ponder these questions instead -
+ Q - How will I fit in to my world — business and personal — without drinking? Will I be boring and unable to relate? How will I put up with business trips without drinking?
A – How much do you remember of the conversations you had when drinking? Yeah, I thought so. Whether it’s business or personal relations – not drinking is the most hard-core move you can make. It arguably makes you the most interesting person in the room because you’re the only one there who is engaged, present and fully listening. As a professional, I’ve grown more since being alcohol free then I did in years of business. I have the unique advantage of being able to listen to client’s desires once others tune out. And, believe it or not, this has made my job a lot more satisfying AND fun – who knew?
+ Q – Should I continue planning my life around alcohol?
A – How many times have you stayed out longer than you planned because you want “just one more drink”? Found yourself on the perfect beach only to wonder “where can I get a drink?” When did the questions, “when will I get my next drink” and “how much can I get away with drinking,” become such a central force in your life?
+ Q – Is alcohol sabotaging my healthy lifestyle?
A – I considered myself a fitness and wellness oriented person. From basketball and hiking to yoga and mindfulness, my focus has long been on taking care of myself. Deep down in the back of my mind I always knew that alcohol wasn’t fitting into that lifestyle. From losing weight and better sleep to the increased energy and happier mental state – now after 30+ years, I finally know what healthy really feels like. And, yes, it is great saying good-bye to hangovers forever.
